Happenings Around The Club

Firstly I would like to my our great bar staff Leanne, Calum and Jye for their huge efforts on Friday.  It was an extremely busy day and night for them with over a hundred people attending Geoff Johnson’s wake and a busy restaurant and Club in the evening.

I would also like to thank our Club Members who showed great patience and understanding at the bar as the wait was a little longer than normal.  It is very much appreciated by the bar staff.  Thank you

LOST Necklace

BOWLS NEWS

MEN’S BOWLS

Tuesday

Two games of the 14th (and last round) of the SWBL were played at home when our 1st side lost by 33-46 shots to Busselton Red so that they have to play Busselton Red again at Busselton in the first semi-final of the 2nd division this Tuesday. Our 2nd side, on the other hand, although winning on one rink, and drawing on the other, ended fifth on the 3rd division ladder, and thus will not compete in the 3rd division finals this year.

Thursday

48 players turned up for the usual peg-draw organised by Rob Pollard and Johnny Cunneen after the retirement of Peter Cracknell. Brian Buttsworth and Geoff Benn won the meat with 2+25 shots up edging out visitors D.Noxton and Len Mazga on a count-back. The Mars bar was shared by Steve Byrne and Bevan Badger.

Friday

The finals of the Bootleg Brewery Championship Pairs was held in the afternoon in front of our members and a host of visitors attending a wake. Bill Pearce and Rod Winchcombe combined handsomely against Kevin Gibb and Butch Sharpe to claim the Championship, while Ralph Don and Bill Hitsert also won the Plate with relative ease, beating Martin Osborne and Norm Gage.

Saturday

Two semifinals of the Leeuwin League were held at Margaret River on a slightly damp and cold summer’s day. Our 1st side, Dunsborough Blue, lost the aggregate by just two shots, Gary Davies’ rink being 5 shots up, and Dennis Frost’s four 7 shots down, and will take on Augusta Blue in the preliminary final at Margaret River next Saturday. Our 2nd side, Dunsborough White, earned a week off by winning their first semi-final against Cowaranup Gold. Ian Creagh’s rink drew, while Bill Hitsert’s four won by a comfortable margin. The side will play the winner of the 2nd semi-final at Margaret River in the Grand-final of the 2nd Division on 10th  March.

Sunday

There were 21 entries this year for the Professionals Singles Championship played in a good spirit on a fine day with fierce competition and close finishes on several rinks. The semi-finalists for the Championship include a majority of previous winners in the form of Kelly Allsop, who will play Dennis Frost, and Mike Brown who will toss with Gary Davies for the mat. Brian Logan put up a great fight with Dennis losing only 21-17 while Hans Queckfeldt received great plaudits from the many Alfresco spectators when Mike Brown just out-drew him on the last end to win 21-19. There were several close games in the Plate as well that will see Toby McCarthy vying with Garry Robinson and Tom Reynolds with Mick Finney in the semi-finals.

Both semi-finals will commence at 12.30 this Friday with the finals to be played at 3.30.

Our captain Geoff Benn, who has organised all our men’s competitions this season with great competence and humour, thanks Jill Winter, Judy Henderson, and Sharon Sharpe as well as several men for acting as markers on the day.

CROQUET AWARDS NIGHT

This event was held last Thursday at the Dunsborough Club.  A great meal was had by all.  Big thanks to Callum our wonderful chef and staff.  The presentation evening was chaired by Terry Herd, who did herself proud in keeping the evening running along smoothly.

A huge thank you to our sponsors who gave generously towards the awards presented to deserving participants in three codes of croquet.

A special thank you goes to the club president, Mr Rob Prentice for attending.  We were honoured by your presence and you did not need your tin hat.

To our perpetual trophy sponsor Mrs Estelle Perry, again thank you for believing in our small group of croquet players.

To all the award winners:   Congratulations on a magnificent effort throughout the year.  You deserve a well done!!

To all the croquet players that attended, you made the evening special and the ladies looked very glamourous.  Maybe next year we roll out the red carpet.  Guys you looked great to.  I was being very observant.
