BOWLS NEWS

LEEWIN LEAGUE CLUB CHALLENGE
On Saturday April 28 the LLCC kicked off on our club greens. This competition is based on the APL which is played in Mandurah. Bowlers may remember the first time the APL was played as Judy and Don Henderson represented our club and reported that it was a fantastic time for them.
The team from Dunsborough is Sharon and Butch Sharpe, Merv Mott and Janice Hoover whilst Ian Creagh and Dennis Frost are emergency players.
There was a buzz in the air! Definitely a buzz from all the players. Our League needs an injection and perhaps this could be IT! Having an on-line communication directly with the weather gods we set up a perfect day to kick-start this event.
Three players are in each team, two bowls per player, two sets of five ends makes one game with a one end tiebreaker if required. There is a one hour time limit, so pretty much no discussion around the head and one power play allowed each set. Each club plays each other once, so three games during the day. A maximum of five points for each game coming from an overall win for three points, and one point for each set one and one half point for each set tie.
We were off and running in the dark and learning as we ran and what a great time it was. Cowaramup became a giant killer when they took down Margaret River and won five points on the first game. Augusta would not allow our team to take a trick and we went down five zip as well after feeling confident on quite a few ends.
However the second game was different with Merv, Sharon and Butch keeping Cowaramup at bay and took the five points decisively whilst on the next green Augusta kept up with their form.
Merv played each game for our team and lead us very well. He, Butch and Janice won the five points from Margs whilst Augusta showed their strength yet again.
At the end of the first week Augusta is on top of the ladder with 11 points whilst the home side holds 10, Cowaramup is on 5 points and Margs on one.
There was a lot of fun out there on the greens, a lot of noise and encouragement from each team member to urge each other on. A few supporters dropped by and added their voices as well. This is how bowls should be played – with a lot of fun and encouragement from each other.
We look forward to travelling to Cowaramup next Saturday. As this is only a four week competition it will be over before we can blink too much – but the team is fully committed to the event and strategic planning for next week is already under way.

MEN’S BOWLS
36 bowlers gathered last Thursday for the regular peg-draw that saw Toby McCathy and Geoff Oddy smash the field with a 26+ win after the two games. Ken Holyoake and a visitor from Busselton, Kevin Schemald were runners-up.
MIXED TUESDAY SOCIAL BOWLS
We had our first winter roll up of Tuesday mixed Social Bowls on April 24th and the weather was extremely kind to us. 19 players turned up to make it a very successful start. In the prEliminary games Norm Gage was a streak ahead of everyone and the first into the finals, followed by Mick Finney, Wendy Collins and Peter Etherington.
Norm and Mick were the only two to score 1 point each in the final and finished in a tie for first with Wendy and Peter hot on their hells. Well done everyone and will see you again next Tuesday.

Croquetwest SW Association Croquet Tournament Dunsborough 28/29 April 2018. A great two days!
Last Saturday and Sunday, the Croquet Section ran the Croquetwest AC SW Div 2 Level Play Singles Tournament. 8 players from Perth and South West clubs enjoyed 2 gloriously sunny days of Singles Croquet. The tournament involved 3 x 2 ½ hr games on Saturday and 2 x 2 ½hr games on Sunday.
The Runner – Up was Kay Swan from Como.

The winner was David Squire from Moorabinda, Bunbury.
I was a joy to see the facilities at the Club being enjoyed and used to the full. There was a stream of onlookers taking a keen interest in the games. It bodes well for the future of local Croquet.

The task of organising the event was made easier by the volunteers who helped beforehand and on the day: the croquet members who made cakes, the Greenkeepers David Collins, Brian, John and Phil, David Morris – our local expert on all things croquet, Max and David Bell for setting up, Wendy and David Collins for billeting, Helen, Julie and Frances who came and helped and especially David Collins for IT support exraordinaire, and lastly Vaile and Raelene for ongoing support and tireless work throughout the two days.

TENNIS NEWS
Tennis Section is attracting many new members and good numbers at Members’ Organised Play on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Thursday mornings – often having all courts in use. Social Tennis last Saturday afternoon saw all courts in use as well as some Members needing to sit out the occasional set to make way for others. This was an opportunity to rest and watch some great quality tennis.
Dunsborough Tennis will field two Men’s and two Ladies’ teams in the Bunbury Teams Carnival this coming weekend – Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 May. This is an annual event held at Bunbury Tennis Club that is very well attended and it will be the first time Dunsborough Tennis has entered four teams. (Last year two teams were entered and the previous two years, just one team). Good luck to all participants!
The school holidays have seen many of our Junior tennis players travel to Perth for the North Beach Tennis Club Junior Tournament and Country Week Tournament. Our coach, Paige Newhill, travelled to Perth for these events and to watch her players. These tournaments are a great way of providing younger players with great competition and the drive to improve their performance as well experiencing other court surfaces and meeting many other young players.

CYCLE NEWS

Over 1,200 competitors made the journey to the Dunsborough & Districts Country Club for two big days of racing at this years X-Adventure Off-Road Triathlon and new Aquathlon-X, battling not only for prizemoney but also a spot at the World Championships and glory of a State Title.
The weekend got off to a stellar start with magical weather and conditions for competitors in Saturday’s Short Course X-Adventure, Kids X-Adventure and Groms X-Adventure races.
Saturday’s Short Course X-Adventure saw Hilton Power, 35 of Scarborough and 14-year-old Lauren Mellett from Stratham in WA take top honours.
In the Kids X-Adventure Kale Arena and Zoe Davison were fastest over the line, Davison blitzing the field to become overall champion with a two minute lead in 37 minutes, 21 seconds.
The Groms X-Adventure for the smallest of the off-road racers rounded out the day’s action.
Sunday’s inclement weather didn’t seem to slow the racing down, with Michael Lori and Kristen Gardner battling through the challenging conditions to take the X-Adventure 2018 Long Course and Cross Triathlon State Championship titles with fast racing and close tussles.
After coming out of the water neck and neck with close rival Jonathan Sammut, Michael Lori was very swift across the rocks to attain a nine minute lead heading into the final leg, the mountain bike.
Michael Lori, 27 of Perth, put on the gas in the challenging mountain bike leg to finish in an impressive two hours, 27 minutes, 2 seconds; a full 15 minutes ahead of the field to take out the $500 prize money.
“I knew I needed as big a lead as possible so I just went for it. The rain made it tough; it was slippery on the rocks, but you have to commit. You have to carry your momentum the whole time, as soon as you slow down, that’s when you start falling.” Lori said.
“I’m stoked, I’ve had a great local season, where I’ve managed to take out the wins where I’ve showed up, and Jonney’s been pushing me every time, so I’m always nervous when he shows up. But it’s great to take another win.”
Rounding out the Long Course X-Adventure podium was runner-up Brad Wardrope (San Remo, 2:42:23) and Adam Oldmeadow in 2:46:02.
Not much separated the top women after 1500 metres of swimming, 12km coastal trail running and a 20km mountain bike through Meelup National Park.
Kristen Gardner, 42 of City Beach (2017 runner-up) won in two hours, 53 minutes, 57 seconds and walked away with $500 cash. Rachael Smith was runner-up in 02:58:49, ahead of Dunsborough’s Jess Reynolds who also repeated history with another 3rd place, today in a time of 2:59:35.
Following the X-Adventure Long Course action was the new Aquathlon-X; featuring a 1000m ocean swim and 5km coastal trail run. Walking away with State Titles and berths at the Aquathlon World Championships was reigning 19&U world Aquathlon champion Rahul Jegatheva, 16 of Perth and Dunsborough’s Nicola Hayes, 38.
John Jacoby Race Director couldn’t have been more thrilled with the weekend of off-road racing.
“With strong winds forecast we had to make adjustments to the swim courses to hug the coastline which worked well, and was well-received.
“Despite a few downpours today, which heightened the difficulty level on the courses slightly with slippery rocks and some mud on the mountain bike leg, everyone seemed to get through it in great spirits. Today’s swim was pretty challenging to begin with, a hard slog out to the turnaround buoy, but they all came back fast, with some great times.
“We were blessed with magical weather yesterday, and slightly more challenging conditions today, but all in all it’s been a fantastic weekend of exciting racing down here in Dunsborough, we hope you all had a blast out there.
“X-Adventure Dunsborough is one of the highlights of the year, and we can’t wait to be back next March 30-31 for X-Adventure 2019! Thanks to everyone for making it an awesome weekend of off-road racing.
X-Adventure Dunsborough is the ultimate mix of triathlon and adventure racing; featuring ocean swimming, trail running and mountain bike riding, with the courses passing through the pristine coastal wilderness of beautiful Geographe Bay and Meelup Regional Park.
Returning for its sixth year in 2018, the X-Adventure weekend included long and short course races, two kids’ events plus the all-new Aquathlon-X.
Elevating the profile of this popular event was the new World Championships qualifier status and WA State Championships titles for the Long Course X-Adventure and Aquathlon-X.
There were stacked fields in all races across the weekend with over 1,200 athletes competing and hundreds more spectators.
Congratulations to all the club members that participated especially the following;
