BOWLS NEWS
MEN’S BOWLS
Tuesday
Dunsborough first side took just one point from Brunswick at home when Mike Brown’s four won by 5 shots, while Garry Davies’ team lost by 7. As a result, Busselton Red has overtaken Dunsborough by just one point on the 2nd division SWBL ladder so the next games will be important in ascertaining where the home final will be played in the 2nd division. Meanwhile, in the 3rd division, our second side earned 3.5 points when Graeme Winter’s four drew against Capel at home, while Rob Prentice’s team won easily. This leaves Dunsborough in fifth position on the 3rd division ladder.
Thursday
45 bowlers enjoyed Peter Cracknell’s peg-draw on a beautiful summer’s day. The meat was won by visiting Len Mazga from Busselton, partnering Kelly Allsop and Syd Rogers with 2+26. The triple of Rod Winchcombe, Andre Gil, and Wayne Coyle were just two shots behind, while the Mars bar was enjoyed by Henk De Boer, Martin Osborne, and visiting Jim Paganoni from Busselton.
Saturday
Dunsborough Blue easily beat Augusta White at home to take four points, with solid wins on both Dennis Frost’s and Gary Davies’ rinks. Unfortunately, Dunsborough Red were unable to return from Margaret River with the single point that was essential if Dunsborough was to earn a home final (via Dunsborough Blue). Both Brian Buttsworth’s and Graeme Winter’s teams were well beaten on the new Margaret River synthetics. Ian Creagh and Bill Hitsert’s fours won by narrow margins at Cowaranup to take four points from Cowaranup Gold. At Augusta, Don Henderson’s four drew their game on the last end to rest just 0.5 points from Augusta Blue, as Wendell Hoover’s team were beaten on the other rink.
At the end of the 11 rounds of the Men’s Pennant season Margaret River Green pipped Dunsborough Blue by just 0.5 point to earn the home finals. Dunsborough Blue will play Augusta Blue in the semi-finals of division 1, while Dunsborough White will play Margaret River White in the semifinals of division 2, both games on February 17th.
Sunday
16 teams entered the Men’s Bootleg Brewery Championship Pairs on a pleasant day. Three rounds of bowls were strongly contested by rink winners, while two rounds of the plate also took place. There were some nail-biting finishes that saw Kevin Gibb and Butch Sharpe require an extra end to beat Rob Prentice and Johnny Tucker, while Rod Winchcombe and Bill Pearce only overcame Geoff Benn and Tom Reynolds on the last end of their game. Ralph Don and Bill Hitsert won their way into the plate final while the novice Martin Osborne played excellent bowls partnering Norm Gage in beating Kelly Allsop and Merv Mott by just a shot on the last end.
It was great to see Jim Holroyd in club colours on the day being happy to enjoy competitive bowls after several years with his corporate team.
Old friends update
