BOWLS

MEN’S BOWLS NEWSLETTER

Tuesday MM Bowls was supported by 23 very keen bowlers and saw Gail Barry emerge winner from a tie for Runner Up position shared by Geoff Oddy, Steve Christensen and Graeme Winter.

Thursday Men’s Social Bowls was only for the brave hearted given the weather prediction for the day.

However 14 guys did roll up and whilst play was delayed by 10 minutes at the start because of rain, they did manage to complete 2 games of 10 ends rain free!!

Winners were Geoff Benn, Butch Sharpe & Kevin Nichols with Keith Bowden & Peter Wilcox Runners Up.

It was noted that Rod Grist was in Perth undergoing medical procedure and best wishes were extended to him.

Again Saturday Snakes and Ladder event was threatened by the weather but 16 players enjoyed the day in rather pleasant conditions.

JemCoupar was outright winner with a distinguished win of 6 points with 11 shots.

Kevin Nichols with 5 points and 11 shots was Runner Up and Gary Robinson third with 4 points and 15 shots.

Both Kevin and Gary look like they’ll be swabbed by stewards Janis and Wendell and no doubt be seeded vertically – the price paid for bowling well!!

CROQUET NEWS

WACA Tournaments:

Congratulations to David Morris who recently played in the State Open Singles at Nedlands and the Patron’s Trophy at Moorabinda against players of a much lower handicap. The Patron’s Trophy attracts players from interstate, and many of them used the Nedland’s tournament for practise.

At Nedlands David had two wins in the round robin format and also won the crossover match. His final placing was 15th out of 18.

In the Patrons Trophy he came 10th out of 20 by virtue of reaching the plate final. All matches were the best of three. In David’s first match of the tournament his opponent was ranked 5th in Australia and 20th in the world. He lost 26-1 and 26-9 and then moved in to the plate. David won two matches to get to the final of the plate David where he went down 25-9, 16-23 and 26-6. He gained valuable experience by playing what amounts to Div 1 tournaments, and now finds himself on a handicap of 4.5.

Playing Times:

There are now four sessions of croquet each week. Association croquet is played on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8.30am until 12.30. Ricochet and Golf Croquet is played on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 2.30pm until 4.30. Names must be in 15 minutes before play starts.

It is preferable for new players to attend the afternoon sessions as instruction is provided and the format is more relaxed.

TENNIS NEWS

Tennis court at Dunsborough Country Club

Tennis Section Busy-Bee.    A strong and hearty band of tennis enthusiasts braved Sunday’s battering weather to replace the orange bunting that was guarding the “super-pit” from wayward wanderers falling in.  The result is a sturdy pine post and hinge-joint fence with the better bunting resurrected on the wings.   Thank you to the weather defying group of Barb 1 metre” Noble, Stan “Crowbar” Noble, Brian “chainsaw” Walker, Vicki “sandwiches” Teede, Terry “rammer” Hodges, John “borer” McCallum, and Greg “sketch” Banfield …….and also to all the others that volunteered to come, but we didn’t have enough tasks.  There will certainly be more busy-bees.
